To provide quality legal aid services to the poor and vulnerable in society in order to facilitate their access to justice as provided under the Legal Aid Act No. 1 of 2021.

Our History

The evolution of legal aid in Zambia from 1945 to present day.

2021

The 1967 Act together with its Amendments was repealed and replaced by the Legal Aid Act No. 1 of 2021, which expanded the Legal Aid Board's mandate.

2005

In 2005, the Act expanded the Board's role in supervising and administering legal aid, leading to the establishment of the Legal Aid Board as an autonomous.

2000

In 2000, it established the Legal Aid Fund and a Board to supervise it, introducing the Judicare system, allowing private legal practitioners to act for legally aided persons for a fee.

1972

In 1972, it allowed the Director to seek contributions from legally aided individuals based on their means.

1967

In 1967, the Legal Aid Act (then Cap. 34 of the Laws of Zambia) replaced the Poor Prisoners Defence Ordinance of 1957.

1945

The history of legal aid in Zambia dates back to 1945 with the passage of the Poor Prisoners' Defence Ordinance of 1945.
