Who Qualifies for Legal Aid in Zambia?

We ensure access to justice for vulnerable and low-income individuals. Check if you meet our criteria:

  • Financial Means Test: Monthly income below ZMW 3,000 (threshold may vary by household size)
  • Legal Merit: Your case must have reasonable grounds under Zambian law
  • Priority Groups:
    • Women and children (especially GBV cases)
    • Persons with disabilities
    • Elderly (60+ years)
    • Detainees without representation
    • Victims of human rights violations
  • Case Types Covered: Criminal defense, family law, land disputes, labor rights, and constitutional matters
  • Exclusions: Business/commercial disputes, libel/slander cases (unless linked to human rights)

What types of cases does the Legal Aid Board handle? +

We handle a wide range of criminal and civil matters including but not limited to: murder, rape, theft, assault, child maintenance, custody, inheritance disputes, land disputes, employment matters, and constitutional rights cases. Some specialized matters may be referred to partner organizations.

Is there any cost for legal aid services? +

Our core services are provided free of charge to eligible clients. However, in some civil matters where monetary awards are obtained, a small contribution may be required. All criminal defense services are completely free for qualifying individuals.

How long does the application process take? +

For urgent criminal matters (especially when someone is detained), we prioritize and can often provide immediate assistance. For civil matters, the assessment typically takes 3-5 working days. Complex cases may require additional time for proper evaluation.

Can I choose my legal practitioner? +

While we cannot guarantee assignment to a specific practitioner, we consider client preferences when possible. Our team consists of qualified and experienced lawyers who are assigned based on case type and complexity to ensure the best representation.
